Have you ever tried counting calories?

Do you even NEED to count calories?

If you’ve tried, perhaps you went the whole way and bought a food scale, weighed and measured every single thing that touched your lips, diligently logging into MyFitnessPal or some other app or method.

(that sounds exhausting, right?)

If you did, how long did you keep up with it?

Perhaps you are one of the rare people who LOVES this method and thrive while doing it.

I’m willing to bet (and you know I’m a betting man!) that most of you don’t fall into that camp.

If you’ve tried it, I’d bet you didn’t stick with it for long.

Hopefully, you found another way to moderate your food intake. count calories

Perhaps you just gave up on it entirely and went back to your old ways.

I’ve got a secret for you: Diligently counting calories doesn’t work for most people, myself included!

Whether or not you NEED to count calories depends on your goal as it certainly has its place.

For most of us, however, it is not necessary.

In my program, I teach it as a potential strategy, but it is absolutely not required for most people to lose weight.. and certainly not to eat healthily.

I do think it has its place, however.

I challenge clients to do it temporarily, for 1-3 weeks.

If it doesn’t work, then why have people do it? Isn’t that just a waste of time and energy?

Nope, not in my opinion.

Like anything in life, what is measured can be managed (or better yet, improved)!

I find that this strategy brings tremendous awareness to our eating habits.

Most of us are on auto-pilot and don’t even realize what or how much of something we are eating.

Countless times, I’ve had clients tell me they eat very healthily… but then when we track and look at the results, they are shocked!

“I had no idea that [INSERT ANY FOOD/SAUCE/DRESSING/DRINK] had so much [INSERT CARBS/FAT/CALORIES]!”

Once we’ve got a handle on the current state, we can start to make mindful changes.

So, is counting calories necessary? For most of us, no.

BUT, it can be beneficial for a brief period…

To calibrate your diet and get a feel for the “right” amount and types of food for you…

However, it’s rarely a long-term strategy I would recommend.

Learning to eat in balance is what I teach clients to strive for.

What’s been your experience?
