Motivation is Bullshit!

There is no shortage of self-help gurus in the world, probably in your social media feeds, who claim to be able to help spur you to action – help you find your motivation to accomplish those goals you’ve been putting off forever.

Maybe some are good. Most probably aren’t.

There are lots of opinions on motivation, lots of tactics to inspire it… but the take I like best is this: “Motivation is bullshit”!

Perhaps you’ve seen the Ted Talk Mel Robbins did many years ago or other appearances where she’s talked about her 5-second rule.

But if you haven’t seen this interview she did with Tom Bilyeu on Impact Theory, stop what you are doing and go watch it now. Seriously.

Ever felt super motivated about a change… “Tomorrow/Monday/Next week/(someday) I’m  going to _____! Yes, I’m going to do it this time! I can’t wait to get started!”

Then when tomorrow/Monday/next week/whenever comes to pass… “eh, I don’t feel like it”.

“It’s too cold outside / I’m too tired / I’ve got too much other stuff to do / blah blah blah”

Sound familiar? It’s all in this interview. And how to move past it.

I’m tellin’ ya, there is so much gold in this interview, I can hardly stand it!

You may not have 50 minutes to devote to it right now, that’s fine. At least take a minute and bookmark either the podcast or the video for later.

Listen on your commute, watch it tonight instead of Netflix.

Here are a few of the highlights that you can jump right to:

Mel explains why she thinks motivation is garbage. [2:31]

Mel exposes the trap of the knowledge-action gap and “tomorrow” syndrome. [14:07]
