Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

An evidence-based, skills-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to someone who is experiencing a mental health or substance-use challenge.

What You Will Learn

Learn how to identify risk factors and warning signs for mental health and substance use challenges, increase confidence to provide strategies to help someone in crisis and non-crisis situations, and gain knowledge of where to turn for help.

Available in Adult, Youth, and Higher Education modules.

Why its important

MHFA equips people with the skills and knowledge to provide initial support to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or problem. By recognizing and responding to signs of distress, mental health first aiders can provide reassurance, guidance and referrals to appropriate resources for further support and treatment. Ultimately, mental health first aid can help reduce stigma, promote early intervention and save lives.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Everyone can help prevent suicide. Being ready to help could save a life.

What You Will Learn

Learn skills to provide a suicide first-aid intervention, work with someone to develop a personalized

safety plan to keep safe-for-now, and connect with further help.

Why It’s Important

When people are thinking about suicide, they almost always express their pain in ways that invite others to reach out and help. Training empowers someone to recognize these signs and provide life-saving support.

The vast majority of suicides can be prevented with the right knowledge and skills.

Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Training

A skills-based training designed to teach people how to recognize people in crisis, identify suicide warning signs, and apply the mental health equivalent of CPR to someone who may be at risk of suicide.

What You Will Learn

  • How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
  • How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
  • The common causes of suicidal behavior
    The warning signs of suicide
  • How to get help for someone in crisis

Why It’s Important

Suicide has existed throughout history, across all cultures and time periods. People’s reasons for thinking about suicide are complex and vary.

Regardless of background or experience, anyone can learn skills to keep someone safe and alive.

Compassionate Listening (CL)

Compassionate listening is a communication skill and approach that involves actively listening to others with empathy, understanding, and without judgment. It is a form of attentive and mindful listening that seeks to truly understand the speaker's perspective, feelings, and needs, and respond in a compassionate and non-reactive manner.

What You Will Learn

Basic: Introduction to the five core practices of CL, Centering | Mindful Awareness, Silent Listening, Reflective Listening, Deepening Questions, Listening | Speaking from the Heart, and “Stepping into the Shoes of Another”

Intermediate: Continues the practices learned in the Basic course while exploring Drama Triangle roles, Relationship to Conflict, Labels and Judgments, Understanding and Managing what Triggers/Activates/Hijacks our ability to Listen, and again – “Stepping into the Shoes of Another”

Why It’s Important

Reflective listening is skill that is a practice, like meditation, and it is the foundation to improving relationships, communication, and understanding. Thus, fosters connection.
